Sodolak's
Sodolak's is a steak house west of College Station in Snook, Texas (also home to Slovacek Sausage). It does not serve BBQ of any kind, but internet tales of chicken fried bacon got me curious, and I was already on a BBQ tour of Bryan/College Station.
This place is a no frills steak joint out, and chicken fried bacon is just an appetizer. There were three of us, so we got two orders. After each plate came out with eight slices apiece, we realized we may have over ordered.
Of course it came with gravy for dipping.
And the thin slices glisten in the sunlight.
Of course the plate soaks up most of the grease.
While enjoyable and unique, the heavy breading hid the flavor of the too thin slices, and gravy was required to bring out any other flavor. Maybe bacon is better left unadorned.
No better way to kick off "Heart Healthy February" than with battered, deep-fried bacon. Your wife must've left you some major loopholes, man.
ReplyDeleteAre you determined to have a heart attack before you're 50, or what? All that bbq is bad enough, but chicken-fried bacon? A little self-control is in order.
ReplyDeleteFried bacon aside, what's so bad about barbecue anyway, health-wise? It's better than a lot of things you could eat, especially most fast food. As one of Railhead's T-shirts puts it: Animals Taste Good.
ReplyDeleteIs BBQ unhealthy? Well, my doctor gave me a list of foods to watch out for on the cholesterol front. They were listed from worst to least bad. At the top was beef brisket, and pork ribs took the second spot. Bacon fell somewhere in the middle. So if it's cholesterol you're trying to stay away from, then brisket and ribs are not such a good choice.
ReplyDeleteTrans-fat is the worst. Then I would think fried-anything is pretty bad. Interesting that brisket might have more cholesterol than ribs. The last 2 in moderation balanced with healthier foods (from the vegetable kingdom) and exercise, laughter, family, and friends, should keep most people healthy. I can understand your wife's concern. Of course, your readers appreciate your thorough investigation of TX bbq and reviews. Great that you have a sense of humor and don't take yourself too seriously.
ReplyDeleteSo cholesteral is the culprit, thanks for explaining. That honestly hadn't occurred to me, I'm lucky enough to have my counts fall well into the acceptable range. At least so far. And I eat a LOT of barbecue and have for decades. Something to ask the doc about next check-up.
