There are three Whole Foods in the DFW area who have a smoked meat counter that I know of, and this is the oldest. You might think it would also make it the best compared to the newcomers at Park Lane and in Lakewood, but this place proved to be a sorry competitor. Even the guy behind the counter knew it. I was there at noon and asked for some sliced brisket. He knocked on the hard piece of overcooked meat with his knife and suggested that I order something else. I opted for a three meat plate of pre-chopped brisket, pulled pork and spare ribs.
Every meat was bland as could be. While the chopped beef tasted like little more than fatty roast beef, the pulled pork barely tasted like pig. It was so devoid of flavor, I wondered how it was possible. The ribs were chewy with too much unrendered fat. None of the meats had a wisp of smoke, and I wondered why they called it a BBQ counter. At least the spicy beans and creamy potato salad were good.

I think the Whole Foods at Preston and Forest has BBQ counter, not that I've tried it.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you're about ready for a trip back to Milt's.
ReplyDeleteI love how the guy is embarassed at the quality of the BBQ... That's how you know the difference b/w a BBQ place, and a place that serves BBQ.
